The Stage is Now: Welcome to the first edition of our Newsletter

by Mark Cuddy

So many firsts are happening!

Since it’s April, let me shower you with appreciation.

You are the first ones to accept our monthly updates, and that means so much to me. We are doing this together. When I broached the idea of The Classics Company in the fall, I was met with enthusiasm and words of wisdom. That gave me the confidence to tackle the details of incorporating a new non-profit (with the guidance of Dan O’Brien at Woods Oviatt) and creating our online portal with the talent of family members Hilary Short and Gus Cuddy. We launched it to the public on March 11 and our website has gotten over 1300 visits since!

I’ve been saying that our goal is to make a classical theatre company that Rochester deserves.

What I mean is that we have many arts & cultural blessings in Rochester, and with major institutions such as the Eastman School of Music and the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra alongside smaller ensembles, one could say that a big part of Rochester’s brand has a decidedly classical imprint – at least in music. Geva Theatre and Rochester Broadway Theatre League are the well-supported leading players in the theatre ecology, but neither is focused on the classical canon. It seems rather obvious to me that our community needs a classical theatre to fully embrace the scope of dramatic literature.

And you seem to think so, too.

Soon, we will launch our annual fund and season subscription campaigns.

I’ll have more information about those in the next newsletter.

Know an actor who should audition for The Classics Company?

They happen April 28-30 and they can find out more at our audition hub.

Dramaturgical Dip: The Seagull

In the meantime, here’s a little preview of the first play featured in our inaugural season and the climate in which Anton Chekhov wrote it.
